Deb Risisky, PhD is a Professor in Southern Connecticut State University’s Department of Public Health. She primarily teaches Program Planning & Evaluation and Intro to Health Promotion, along with freshman seminars and courses in outdoor adventure/recreation. She recently led in the creation of a new interdisciplanary major in Health & Wellness Coaching and serves as the program director. Her research is focused on evaluating programs (violence prevention, midwifery, and educational access) and the intersection of recreation and health. Currently, she is conducting a statewide research project on use of rail trails in regards to wellness with two other faculty in the state university system. Additionally, she is the evaluator (and co-author) of a $3 million grant from National Science Foundation, the Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation. The Nutmeg LSAMP program is aimed at first and second year underrepresented minority students to be supported in their early academic careers in STEM disciplines and the Nutmeg Alliance includes the four Connecticut State University system campuses. She is the founding board member and Secretary of CT SOPHE, the newest chapter. She spent years as a health educator with the Emory Regional Training Center for Family Planning, running teen pregnancy prevention programs. She has a BS in Community Health Education from Ithaca College, an MEd in Health Promotion and Behavior from the University of Georgia, and a PhD in Maternal & Child Health & Epideimiology from UNC-Chapel Hill.
