Learning Objectives:
At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
By the end of the session, participants will be able to describe the suggested theme areas for NIYG 3.0 upgrade.
By the end of the session, participants will be able to list specific enhancements in the theme areas-Culturally inclusive, Trauma-informed, Disability inclusive and 2SLGBTQ+ youth content.
By the end of the session, participants will be able to describe the process of the upgrade and user testing of NIYG 3.0
Brief Abstract Summary: NIYG 3.0 upgrade seeks to redesign NIYG 2.0 to enhance cultural relevance, inclusivity for 2SLGBTQ+ and neurodiverse communities, and trauma sensitivity. A more efficient backend tool will also be developed for automated data management. The design document for the four theme areas resulted in a blueprint for production with outline of specific task changes, an updated system for backend data collection for analysis and reporting, and a projected timeline for changes and testing. In conclusion, creating an inclusive, trauma informed curriculum requires community and expert input along with adequate resources to execute the changes.
Detailed abstract description: Background. American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) youth experience sexual and reproductive health disparities. Culturally relevant, disability friendly, gender inclusive, and trauma-informed sexual health education programs can help address the needs of all AI/AN youth by promoting a sense of safety, peer support, and empowerment. Native It’s Your Game 2.0 (NIYG 2.0) is a 13-lesson online sexual health curriculum for middle school AI/AN youth (www.HealthyNativeYouth.org).
Aim/
Purpose: To redesign NIYG 2.0 to be more culturally and 2SLGBTQ+ inclusive, trauma informed and disability friendly, with a streamlined and automated backend data export tool.
Methods: A design document informed by the principles of universal design and trauma-informed care was developed with input from subject matter experts and sexual health practitioners. This document prioritized the identified enhancements by importance, utility, ongoing feedback from users and resources from the lens of four theme areas: gender and sexuality inclusivity, disability friendliness, trauma and culturally informed content. Additionally, comprehensive backend data collection was proposed to enable administrators to compile user data for analysis and dissemination purposes.
Results: This resulted in a) cross-tabulations (lesson activities x theme) that specified redesign specifications; b) a NIYG 3.0 production blueprint (design document) comprising 131 specific program adaptations within the four domains: 1) cultural inclusivity (n=28), 2) trauma-informed strategies (n=21), 3) 2SLGBTQ (n=44) inclusivity, and 4) neuro-diverse (ADA) responsiveness (n=38); c) automated backend data export and d) a projected 9-month production timeline inclusive of usability and feasibility testing within AI/AN communities to go live in Fall 2024.
Conclusion: Adaption of evidence-based digital sexual health education programs toward disability friendly, trauma-informed and inclusive strategies requires input from experts and community, a systematic approach to prioritize tasks, and sufficient resources to accommodate programming changes.
